As the weather gets cooler and nights are longer, we start looking for new ways to spend time together as a family, now that swimming pools are closed and it’s time to head home from the beach.
Autumn is the perfect time to bring out those board games and get those competitive juices flowing. As a bonus, it’s a great way to bond with teens and usually convince them to put down their devices and actually TALK to you.
My family has a long tradition of board games. We always get new ones for Christmas and play tons of games. Unfortunately, we don’t love tons of games and the ones that don’t become favorites get donated.
Raising five kids, I spent plenty of years playing Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, and even Junior Monopoly. There were times when it felt like those games would never end.
But, all of those hours playing board games with toddlers and preschoolers paid off now that the kids are teenagers: my kids still love to play board games! And the best part as a mom is that now I can play a game that I actually enjoy with people who give me still competition to win. I don’t need to manage temper tantrums or grab pieces out of smaller siblings’ hands (or mouths) and I don’t feel tempted to throw a game in order for it to end.
It gets tricky to find a time when the kids and the parents are all available now that everyone’s schedules are so hectic. And game night doesn’t happen often, but it does happen. And when it does, it’s one of the best nights of the year.
This is a list of our family’s favorite games as tested by my teens. I hope you find inspiration for your next family board game night with your teens.
Play gives children a chance to practice what they are learning.
