Most books I read cover to cover: take some notes, gain some insight, be entertained, or learn something new. But there are a few that I just like to dip my toe in for a page or two just every once in a while and I may not ever read all the way through. These are the books that almost permanently live in my nightstand. I may not read from them for weeks or months but suddenly I am curling up with one several nights in a row for a minute or two. These books let me be fickle like that and are always there when I need them.

“A good book is an event in my life.”

Stendhal

Let me introduce you to my Nightstand Books:

When I need a kick in the pants or some inspiration or some quiet reassurance that I’m on the right track, I will spend a few minutes reading any random page of You Are a Badass Every Day.

The World According to Mr. Rogers is like a hug from my childhood. He was always there and he was such a calm and consistent friend. I grew up feeling like I had known and been loved by him. I am so sad that the world no longer has Mr. Rogers in it, but we still have his words.

The Secret Lives of Color is just such a fascinating read for me because I am obsessed with color. It is the story and history of almost every hue, shade and value you could imagine. It’s just such a perfect book to look up a shade or just spend a rainy evening making my way through the rainbow.

Emotional Advantage was just a book I picked up on a whim and had no idea how in love with it I would fall. It’s an excellent handbook with exercises and journaling to go through and feel every emotion, work through it, and learn to enjoy the lessons it teaches. Whether I am feeling up or down, this book helps me process and enjoy the value of the entire spectrum of emotion.

Joyful may actually be my favorite book of all time. It’s an owner’s manual for feeling and creating more joy. It talks about so many of my favorite things, colors, sparkles, balloons and more. Plus there is an entire chart on how to bring different aspects of joy to different occasions.

What books do you like to keep nearby to dip into occasionally? Let me know in the comments below!
